The problem of having to read the tiny print on labels in search of ingredients that disagree with us is over at last. GeniusFood and GeniusVeg, an app by Genius Choice makes it possible to check the ingredients in a tin or jar in just a few seconds, and the same applies to packets or any other industrially processed foods. The app then shows whether the food contains any products to which we are intolerant or which we cannot eat, due to specific dietary or religious reasons. This app is for those with intolerance to lactose, gluten or eggs, allergies to proteins from cows’ milk, crustaceans, fish or peanuts, but also those people who want to products suitable for vegetarians or vegans.
How does it work? By taking a picture of the product’s barcode using a smartphone. The answer comes back quickly informing you whether or not the food contains traces of undesired ingredients. The app can also select the most suitable veg option, from the vegetarian option including dairy products, through to vegan diets.
The app contains thousands of products (about 7000) widely available in Italy and if it is not on the list, users can add it to the software by taking a picture, then sending it to GeniusChoice, which will add it to the list.
